Jakarta: Three United Nations (UN) peacekeepers in Mali were killed and six others were wounded in an attack by unidentified armed elements on Wednesday, the UN mission in Mali has said.

According to the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), the convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) and the troops then came under attack by unidentified gunmen in Mali's Timbuktu region.

The personnel then forced the attackers to flee and the wounded peacekeepers were immediately evacuated by helicopter.

"I strongly condemn this new attack against the blue helmets," said MINUSMA Head Mahamat Saleh Annadif in a press release on Wednesday.

"Despite this difficult and unpredictable environment, MINUSMA will spare no effort to carry out its mandate," he added.

According to reports, the three peacekeepers who lost their lives were from Cote d’Ivoire.
