Jakarta: Indonesia is considered to be able to play a role in the Korean peace process. Director of East Asia and Pacific of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Santo Darmosumarto said Indonesia has this capability.
"Indonesia can play a role in the Korean peace process. Besides having good relations with South Korea, we also have good historical relations with North Korea," Santo said in the 2019 Indonesia-Korea Conference event, Jakarta, Wednesday, September 18, 2019.
"Indonesia has a very large role in ASEAN. So we can help facilitate the Korean peace process through ASEAN," he said.
In fact, continued Santo, two high-level meetings between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un were held in two ASEAN member countries namely Singapore and Vietnam.
"This proves that Southeast Asia is able to facilitate and become a place of dialogue for peace of the Korean Peninsula. It is not impossible that Indonesia will become the next location for the US and North Korea meetings, "said Santo again.
Indonesia and North Korea began diplomatic relations in 1961. Indonesia's first President Soekarno and North Korean leader Kim Il-sung increased bilateral relations between the two countries.
Although the value of trade between Indonesia and North Korea is not too high, but Indonesia is one of the few countries that still maintains diplomatic relations with North Korea and has representation in Pyongyang.
