Jakarta: Indonesia was recently hit by a flood that killed 67 people in the Greater Jakarta area.  Meanwhile, Australia is still being plagued by a forest fire crisis that has raged since September last year.

In the midst of disasters occurring in both countries, Indonesia and Australia sympathize with and support each other.  This was conveyed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi during the Christmas celebration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Monday, January 6, 2020.

"Indonesia is sympathetic to fires in Australia, and said that if there was anything Indonesia could do to deal with fires, we would be happy to do so," Retno said.

She said a statement of sympathy and offer of assistance showed Indonesia’s friendly attitude towards Australia. This is in accordance with the theme of Christmas in Indonesia, 'Live as Friends for Everyone.'

In line with Indonesia, Australia also expressed sympathy for the flood disaster that struck the Greater Jakarta area on the first day of 2020. Foreign Minister Retno claimed to have received sympathy from her Australian counterpart.

The forest fires that hit Australia are reported to have burned millions of hectares of land.  The fire also killed at least 24 people, destroyed 1,200 homes and killed thousands of livestock.
