According to the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's statement clearly contradicts international law and related UN Security Council resolutions.
"Indonesia has consistently opposed Israel's occupation in establishing illegal settlements in the Palestinian territories," the ministry said in a written statement released on Wednesday, November 20, 2019.
"Indonesia urges the international community to unite and continue to provide supports for the struggle of the Palestinian people," it added.
The ministry stated that the construction of illegal settlements in West Bank is a de facto annexation. It also stressed that the policy will continue to become a primary barrier to peace efforts based on a two-state solution.
"The Trump administration is reversing the Obama administration's approach towards Israeli settlements," Pompeo told reporters this week.
"The establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not, per se, inconsistent with international law"," he remarked.
