Jakarta: Functional Groups (Golkar) chairman Airlangga Hartarto said that the presidential and legislative elections should be held separately. He ordered Golkar members to help revise Law Number 7 Year 2017 on General Elections.

"Golkar Party must support efforts to revise the law. We should separate presidential and legislative elections," he said here on Wednesday, December 4, 2019.

Airlangga also stressed that the revised law should reintroduce the closed list proportional system. He believes that the proposal would improve the country's democracy.

The closed list proportional system was used in the 2004 Legislative Elections. Golkar Party succeeded to win the legislative elections that year.

Golkar’s Tenth National Congress will be held from December 3-6, 2019. One of their agendas is to elect Golkar’s Chairperson for the 2019-2024 period.

Five candidates were initially eligible to participate in the party's chairman election. They are incumbent Airlangga Hartarto, Bambang "Bamsoet" Soesatyo, Agun Gunandjar, Ridwan Hasjim and Ali Yahya.

However, Bamsoet, Agun and Ali Yahya decided to withdraw from the part's chairman election. As a result, the election will only be contested between Airlangga and Ridwan Hasjim.
