Jakarta: Indonesia's Covid-19 Handling Task Force on Thursday reported 11,557 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Indonesia to 869,600.

From Wednesday noon until Thursday noon, the total number of recovered coronavirus patients in the country increased by 7,741 to 711,205.

Within the same period, Indonesia's official covid-19 death toll was up by 295 to 25,246.

On Wednesday morning, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) became the first person who officially received covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia.

Early this week, the Sinovac covid-19 vaccine obtained the emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) and halal fatwa from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

Besides Sinovac, Indonesia will also procure covid-19 vaccines from other manufacturers and multilateral programs.

For the record, the covid-19 vaccinations will be carried out for around 182 million Indonesians to obtain herd immunity and will be carried out in stages with the first priority being health workers as the frontline in handling the pandemic.
