    Dengue Fever Claims 43 Lives in NTT Province

    Kupang: Death toll from dengue fever in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province has reached 43, with the latest victim being a four-year-old boy in Kupang City.

    "As of Tuesday, March 17, 2020, the latest fatality from dengue fever was reported in Kupang City. As of Wednesday, the death toll has reached 43," Secretary of the East Nusa Tenggara Health Office David Mandala noted here on Wednesday, March 18, 2020.

    The boy, David, a resident of Oebobo Village, died on Monday, March 16, 2020, allegedly owing to delay in having received medical treatment at health facilities.

    Mandala remarked that the number of dengue fever cases had continued to rise, with the total number of cases having reached 3,731.

    "The highest number of cases were reported in Sikka District reaching 1,396 and 14 deaths," the official noted.

    Kupang City reported the second-highest number of cases, at 529 and six deaths, and 345 cases with four deaths in Alor District.

    The provincial administration has adopted necessary measures to curb the number of fatalities due to dengue fever and dispatched doctors to regions, with high number of dengue fever cases.

    The government has also called on citizens to maintain neighborhood hygiene to cut the breeding chain of Aedes aegypti, a vector of dengue infection.

    The Health Ministry has recorded over 17 thousand cases of dengue fever since January this year, with more than 104 cases that had turned fatal nationwide. (Antara)
