"Children constitute some 2,584 of the 20,355l covid-19 patients," spokesman for the Bangka Belitung Provincial Covid-19 Task Force Andi Budi Prayitno noted here on Wednesday.
According to Prayitno, 73 of the 2,584 children that contracted covid-19 were one year old, 522 were aged between one and four years, and 1,989 were aged between five and 14 years.
The children reside in Pangkalpinang City, Bangka, West Bangka, South Bangka, Central Bangka, Belitung and East Belitung Districts.
The children were believed to have contracted covid-19 after coming in close contact with their parents and friends.
The task force also recorded that 1,511 of the total covid-19 patients were aged between 15 and 19 years, 10,391 were between 20 and 44 years of age, 2,757 were aged between 45 and 54 years, 2,570 were aged between 55 and 69 years, and 532 were above 70 years of age.
"The number of children testing positive for coronavirus increased due to the high mobility of their parents and other family member without following health protocols," he stated.
He noted that the province had recorded 89 fresh covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours.
Bangka Belitung Islands is currently ranked 20th among 34 Indonesian provinces in terms of the covid-19 cases.
"With the addition of 89 cases, the number of confirmed covid-19 cases this week rose slightly as compared to a week earlier," he stated.
