Jakarta: Political observer Ray Rangkuti, said that indirect regional elections can bring various problems.

“There is public notion that direct elections have disadvantages. One of which is  money politics. However, indirect elections can bring more dangeruous, problems" Ray said here on Tuesday, November 12, 2019.

He said that indirect election may bring about an oligarchic political system where the government is solely run by a certain group. He is concerned that indirect elections may allow political parties to arbitrarily elect regional heads.

“Political oligarchy is much more dangerous than money politics. It will deteriorate our democracy.” He said.

He hopes that Indonesia will not return to New Order's system where regional heads used to be elected only by certain group of people.

“This group of people arbitrarily elect people to be the regional heads. They do not do it for the nation but for their group only," he said. (Translator: Muhammad Gestinev)
