Jakarta: Ten regional heads in Indonesia declared their support for the acceleration of the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a virtual event today.

This declaration is part of the Programme for Improving Collaboration between Local Authorities and Civil Society Organisations in Localising and Achieving the SDGs (PEDULI SDGs), a collaborative programme between Bandung Trust Advisory Group (B_Trust) and the European Union with 10 Regional Governments in five provinces of Indonesia.

The PEDULI SDGs programme aims to build the collective capacity of local governments, civil society organisations, and community groups (women, youth and people with disabilities) in localising and implementing SDGs in 10 regencies, namely Cilacap Regency, Grobogan Regency, Kuningan Regency, Majalengka Regency, Ciamis Regency, Central Lombok Regency, Sumbawa Regency, West Sumbawa Regency, Bulungan Regency and Berau Regency.

This programme involves 10 local authorities, 30 civil society organisations in 10 target regions, 30 village governments and 90 community organisers in 30 villages for three years (2020-2023).

Siswanda Harso Sumarto, Senior Director of B_Trust, said that the SDGs are goals that have been agreed upon by various country leaders in the world, including Indonesia, in order to end poverty, reduce inequality and protect the environment.

The SDGs contain 17 goals and 169 targets which are expected to be achieved by 2030. The achievement of the SDGs can only be done if they are localised at local level. Due to the important role of local governments in achieving the SDGs, PEDULI SDGs programme is intended to assist pilot regions in preparing a roadmap/ guideline in localising SDGs values ??and adapting these values ??into the regional development planning.

In addition, this programme also aims to build the capacity and multi-stakeholder partnerships involving local governments, civil society organisations (CSOs), community organisers in the villages, and village governments to collaborate in regional development process.

"Today's declaration is an affirmation of the commitment of regional leaders to collaborate together in developing their regions in accordance with the direction of development that is in line with the Global Goals," he explained in a press release on Wednesday.

In his remarks, the EU Ambassador to Indonesia H.E. Vincent Piket stated that the EU and its Member States are fully committed to be a frontrunner in supporting the emerging countries in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

"Promoting inclusive and sustainable development is central to the EU’s cooperation agenda with Indonesia. We will continue to support the Indonesian Government in the implementation of 2030 Agenda. Meeting the SDGs is especially important now, in the face of the social and  development damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Local governments are key players. It is at the local level that  we can create direct benefits for the citizens," he said.

The event was attended by more than 800 participants comprised national and subnational government representatives from 10 target regions, Associations of Local Authorities, SDGs Centres, civil society organisations, academics and mass media. After the official declaration was signed, the event continued with a public webinar on "The Concept of Localising SDGs in the Regions" with resource persons from B_Trust expert team.

B_Trust will provide intensive technical assistance in 10 target regions which will be carried out online as well as in-person.
