Jakarta: President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo signs Presidential Regulation Number 66 of 2019 concerning the Organization Structure of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI). The Presidential Decree regulates the position of the deputy TNI commander.
"The Deputy Commander is the coordinator of the Armed Forces to realize interoperability/ tri-dimensional integration, that operates under and is responsible to the Commander-in-Chief," read Article 15 paragraph 1 as quoted by Medcom.id on Thursday, November 7, 2019.
The duties of the deputy commander as regulated in Article 15 paragraph 2 include; assist the implementation of the commander's daily duties; provide advice to the commander related to the implementation of national defense policy, the development of TNI posture, the development of doctrine, military strategy and the fostering of TNI strength and the use of TNI force.
Then, carry out the duty of the commander in the event of a temporary and/or permanent absence, and carry out other tasks ordered by the commander. The presidential decree was signed by Jokowi on 18 October 2019.
The position of deputy TNI commander was abolished in the era of President Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur through the Presidential Decree dated 20 September 2000. The last figure in office was Fachrul Razi who now serves as Minister of Religion.
Former TNI Commander General Moeldoko had suggested that the position of deputy TNI commander be revived to President Jokowi in 2015. However, until the full retirement, Moeldoko's proposal received no response.
