Jakarta: The National Police Chief General Idham Azis has appointed Inspector General M Fadil Imran as the new Jakarta Metro Police head.

Imran replaced Insepctor General Nana Sudjana. He previously served as the Head of the East Java Police.

"He was previously the Head of the East Java Police," said the National Police General Inspector General Argo Yuwono here on Monday.

The National Police leader recently removed Jakarta Metro Police and West Java Police heads for their failure to enforce covid-19 restrictions in the two regions.

Previously, firebrand cleric Rizieq Shihab attracted large crowds when he organized public events in Jakarta and West Java provinces.

Last week, thousands of Rizieq's supporters also gathered at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport when the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader returned to Indonesia after nearly three years of self-proclaimed exile in Saudi Arabia.
