Jakarta: The Agency for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BP2MI) recorded that 32,192 migrant workers had returned from countries affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19) outbreak.

Those 32,192 migrant workers were part of the 33,503 migrant workers returning from 85 placement countries until Sunday, March 29, 2020, BP2MI Deputy for Protection Anjar Prihantoro noted in a press statement received here on Monday, March 30, 2020.

According to the BP2MI data, of the 32,192 migrant workers, some 11,566 had returned home from Malaysia; 9,075 from Hong Kong; 5,487 from Taiwan; 2,799 from Singapore; 889 from Brunei Darussalam; 888 from Saudi Arabia; 756 from South Korea; 641 from Italy; 46 from Japan; and 45 from the United States.

The BP2MI has coordinated with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Affairs, and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) -- as the chair of Task Force for Acceleration of COVID-19 Handling -- in handling migrant workers, who were returned home from countries affected by COVID-19.

"This coordination is deemed necessary to ensure that those migrant workers, who return to their respective hometowns, will not be causal to some new epicenter of COVID-19 in the country. The BP2MI will also constantly coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to monitor the return of more Indonesian migrant workers from abroad," Prihantoro remarked.

In connection with migrant workers deported from Malaysia following the country's policy to impose a national lockdown over the COVID-19 outbreak, the BP2MI is conducting surveillance and offering services for them in some border areas, including Tanjung Pinang, Batam, and Nunukan.

Apart from conducting data collection, the BP2MI has also reviewed the health condition of migrant workers, who had recently arrived from Malaysia. (antara)
