"So tomorrow I want to check there," said Mahfud at the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) in Yogyakarta Special Region on Tuesday, January 14, 2020.
He stressed the problem has been resolved after President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's arrival to Natuna. He ordered the Navy soldiers on duty at Natuna to forcefully drive out Chinese fishing vessels when returning to Indonesia’s EEZ.
"Those who want to try entering again, just send them away," he said.
During the visit tomorrow, Mahfud MD will also meet with Riau Islands regional leaders. The main topic of the meeting will be maintaining Indonesian sovereignty.
A number of Chinese fishing boats and coast guard vessels recently entered Indonesia’s EEZ. They catched fish in waters about 130 miles from Ranai, Natuna.
The Indonesian Navy has deployed eight Republic of Indonesia (KRI) ships to patrol and safeguard Natuna’s waters. Based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), China does not have any rights to Natuna's waters.
