Jakarta: The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has warned that the La Nina phenomenon may cause hydrometeorological disasters.

"La Nina phenomenon may cause weather anomalies that lead to hydrometeorological distaters," said BNPB's Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Head Raditya Jati in a press release on Thursday.

"However, the impact is highly dependent on the time, region and intensity," he added.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG)'s Climate Change Information Center Head Supari, a La Nina climate pattern has appeared in the eastern Pacific Ocean

The opposite of El Nino, La Nina is a naturally occurring phenomenon in which sea surface temperatures across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean are cooler than average.

"Several provinces are expected to enter rainy season in October 2020," Supari said during a virtual press conference here on Wednesday.

"The impact of La Nina will not be even across Indonesia," he stated.
