    Landslide Leaves 11 Dead in Muara Enim

    Jakarta: a landslide that occurred in Muara Enim Regeny, South Sumatra Province on Wednesday resulted in 11 deaths. 

    According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Raditya Jati, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Muara Enim Regency, together with other related agencies, have carried out evacuation of victims. The ten victims have been identified by local authorities. Some of them have been handed over to the victims' families.

    "High intensity rain and unstable soil triggered the landslide," said the BNPB official in a press release issued on Thursday.

    This disaster occurred on Wednesday afternoon at around 14.00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The site of the landslide is located in Tanjung Lalang Village, Tanjung Agung Area. It is a traditional coal mine.

    Indonesian people have been urged to remain vigilant and anticipate potential hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, flash floods, landslides and strong winds. Most parts of Indonesia have entered the rainy season this October. In addition, vigilance needs to be increased considering the effects of the La Nina phenomenon.

    According to the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati, the peak of La Nina is expected to occur in December to January, while the peak of the rainy season in Indonesia is expected to occur in January to February.
