Jakarta: Heavy rains triggered floods in Jayapura City, Papua Province on Wednesday evening, killing at least two people.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Raditya Jati, the two dead victims were toddlers.

"The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) is still collecting data and conducting mitigation measures," said the BNPB's Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center head in a press release on Thursday.

"The public is urged to be alert and ready to face potential threats of hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, landslides and strong winds,"

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG)'s Climate Change Information Center Head Supari, a La Nina climate pattern has appeared in the eastern Pacific Ocean

The opposite of El Nino, La Nina is a naturally occurring phenomenon in which sea surface temperatures across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean are cooler than average.

"Several provinces are expected to enter rainy season in October 2020," Supari said during a virtual press conference here on Wednesday.

"The impact of La Nina will not be even across Indonesia," he stated.
