Jakarta: The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) highlights the increasingly advanced development of digital financial services. The reason is, this service can be used by terrorists for group funding.
"The existence of digital financial innovation and the reality of using virtual currency in financial crime heightens the risk of money laundering and financing of terrorism," said PPATK Head Kiagus Ahmad Badaruddin at the Bidakara Hotel, Jalan Gatot Subroto, Pancoran, South Jakarta on Tuesday, January 21, 2020.
According to him, funding for terrorism in the form of digital money laundering is almost similar to the crime of money laundering (TPPU). Terrorists take advantage of digital financial innovations such as crowdfunding and the use of virtual currencies as a source of their activities.
For this reason, Kiagus said that Indonesia has to look at the steps taken by terrorist groups on the digital platform. Some agencies are asked to work together to counter this.
"This reality will certainly be a driving factor in determining the direction of PPATK's policy in optimizing efforts to prevent and eradicate TPPU and TPPT (criminal acts of financing terrorism)," Kiagus said.
PPATK, he said, consistently continued the work program to counter terrorist funding from the digital system. One of them is by strengthening anti-money laundering and preventing terrorism funding (APU-PPT) through the Indonesian Financial Intelligence Institute (IFII).
"The strengthening was carried out with an education program in accordance with the needs of the education participants, which consisted of the reporting party, law enforcement officials, and other related parties," Kiagus said.
PPATK has also launched an e-learning application for the authorities in the scope of PPATK. The application can improve the quality of PPATK in the international world in suppressing crimes that utilize finance.
"Specifically, in terms of prevention and cooperation, PPATK continues to commit and work optimally to complete several programs that are expected to be completed in 2020 and 2021," Kiagus added.
