Jakarta: The General Elections Commission (KPU) said that former corruption convicts should not be eligible to run as regional leaders in the 2020 local elections.

"We will proposed it again in order to revive the spirit of anti-corruption," KPU Commissioner Wahyu Setiawan told Medcom.id, in Jakarta, Thursday, September 19, 2019

KPU is also planning to ban former drug convicts and convicted pedophiles. has informally discussed the issue with political parties.

The KPU will lobby for political parties to agree on this issue. The agency does not want the Supreme Court (MA) to cancel the plan again.

"This has never been done formally, but from informal communication, political parties can understand the KPU's ideas," he said.

Wahyu said almost all political parties fully support the plan. Many parties have expressed their commitment to not nominate former corruption convicts.
