Jakarta: President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has stated that the Indonesian government plans to distibute 5.8 million doses of covid-19 vaccine in January 2020.

"Next Month, we will distribute 10.4 million doses. In March, we will distribute 13.3 million doses. Vaccinations in all regions must run well," said President Jokowi at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday.

In a bid to achieve herd immunity, 181 million Indonesian people must get the vaccine.

Taking into account that one person needs two doses of vaccine, as well as guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) to prepare 15 percent for reserves, the total doses needed are approximately 426 million doses.

According to Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, the central government will provide covid-19 vaccine for Indonesian people through four bilateral schemes and one multilateral scheme.

Of the four bilateral schemes, Indonesia plans to procure covid-19 vaccines from Sinovac, Novavax, AstraZeneca and Pfizer.

For the multilateral scheme, Indonesia will join COVAX program that is initiated by the GAVI vaccine alliance and is supported by WHO and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
