Jakarta: A mud flood, induced by torrential rains, swept through Bolapapu Village, Sigli Regency, Central Sulawesi Province, on Thursday, December 12, 2019, killing two and compelling 707 others to flee their homes, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported.

"The residents are seeking refuge in safe places in Bolapapu Village, including two school buildings, 10 temporary houses, 15 residents' houses, and one official house of the sub-district head," BNPB spokesman Agus Wibowo noted in a press statement released on Friday, December 13, 2019.

According to him, 149 of the evacuees came from hamlet II RT I, 168 were from hamlet III RT II, 180 from hamlet III RT II, and 210 from hamlet III RT I.

Moreover, seven houses incurred major damage, 50 houses suffered light damage, while a church was inundated, as the mud flood swept into the area.

"At 8 p.m. local time, rains began to recede, but none of the evacuees returned to their houses," the BNPB official stated.

The mud flood is the second to hit Sigli Regency after it had swept through Pol Village on Sunday (Dec 8, 2019) at around 6 a.m. local time. The mud flood in Pol Village inundated tens of houses resulting in several residents evacuating to safer grounds. Pol Village also bore the brunt of the flood in 2011, claiming 11 lives.
