"Therefore, there must be steps so these two sectors can grow even greater," Jokowi said at the Presidential Office, Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta on Tuesday, December 10, 2019.
According to him, agriculture and fisheries sectors are not only providers of food. Besides that, these sectors can also contribute greatly to improve people's welfare and reduce poverty.
Jokowi mentioned three important notes that need to be considered to improve these two sectors. First, the focus on these two sectors is only to increase production in the on-farm areas without touching off-farm areas.
He explained that farmers and fishermen need to increase off-farm activities by adding value to their products. He added that officials need to help farmers and fishermen develop their products.
Secondly, farmers and fishermen need funds and financial assistance schemes. In terms of financing, the government is currently providing the People's Business Credit(KUR) scheme with a budget ceiling of IDR190 trillion in 2020.
"I have ordered KUR to design special schemes," said Jokowi.
However, he stressed that financing must also be followed by assistance. He explained Farmers and fishermen need to be thought about financial management, packaging, branding, and marketing.
Finally, the government has been encouraging micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to collaborate with large groups or corporations. That way, they can enjoy larger economies of scale.
"farmers and fishermen can be more effective in obtaining raw materials, accessing working capital and investment, and making efforts to market their products so they can enter the national and global supply chains," Jokowi said.
